I also think that here, there is way way too much discrepancy between the Police Forces. Some outfits in "Civilized" places, like Los Angeles, come across as very hi-tech, advanced and more in line with policing in the UK. Others, such as in the deepest darkest South, are staffed by Billy Bob and his inbred brothers. While differences between the forces exist in the UK, its nowhere near as marked as it is here.
You must be kidding! Didn't the LA police botch the whole O.J. thing? What about Rodney King? Or that bank robbery/shoot out/war that had the police raiding local gunstores for real weapons?

If LA is "civilized" I'll gladly live the rest of my life here in MO as a backwards barbarian!

Good points, well presented! But I'd still rather get pulled over there than by on a deserted country road in Louisiana!

I guarantee that you would probably be treated politely and courteously if you were pulled over in rural Louisiana. Southern people are extremely polite, including the police. Now to be pulled over in Tampa! That would scare me quite a bit.

Hi:

I live in LA -- and it depends upon the fact. If I never hear about OJ again, it won't be soon enough. In any case, he broke my heart on November 18, 1967 [But then if Zenon Andrusyshyn had not had that PAT blocked] -- 23-blast 64 yards, sigh.

There is an interesting immigration twist to the RK beating which I'm not a liberty to disclose. BTW, in the April 1992 riots, the first floor of the LA Federal Building was occupied by INS and IRS. INS was trashed, IRS was not.

On the North Hollywood shoot out, there is also an interesting immigration twist. Again, I'm not at liberty to disclose.

Why post stuff like that then? 'I know a secret, but can't tell you...'
What purpose does that serve?

It's probably something like you had coffee with the attorney representing Emil Matasareanu's family.

I've probably posted this before but it bears repeating: I listen to Five Live and I hear a constant litany of whinging, whining busybodies sticking their nose into someone else's business, usually under the auspices of "being for the children" or "if it saves just one life." We need more legislation... the government needs to do something about it...

As a people, the British have by and large been emasculated and personal responsibility and self-reliance have been abrogated. They have deserve the Nanny state they've got.

pejpm1, both my parents work/worked for the police. The Met police are arrogant scumbags drunk on their own importance. They are unhelpful, rude, and obnoxious.

What was funny though was I'm better armed than the police guarding 10 Downing Street.

\ Citizen, not a subject.
I agree to an extent...but respect for the police has totally disappeared in the UK. I dont think they should have more power to 'control', but they certainly should have more freedom from red tape. The police arent even allowed to stop and search anymore without filling in a lengthy form...I'm not saying that peoples rights should be curtailed, but I think the police should certainly be more visible in London. I hardly ever see a policeman in London anymore....

I agree about the nanny state thing though...the UK and British people in general are a nation of whingers who wants everything done for them without having to take responsibility for anything. The reason for anti social crime is bad parenting, simple as that. If we solved that then we wouldnt need the police to clean up after us....

DH worked as a civilian for a city police department (pop. 80,000) in the UK and works here in Ohio as a civilian for a city police department (pop. 40,000). I hear about the differences ALL the time. The recurring things I hear a lot is that there are not enough police to handle the amount of crime (many times this makes it appear that there is not as much 'lesser' crime than there really is....many don't report minor crime or when the police respond 3 hours after the fact, there is nothing to respond to), the lack of power the police have when dealing with criminals, the police there have to deal with so much "office" work that they can't spend time in the community where they're needed, there is not enough effort by the police to develop positive relationships with the community ('resource' officers in school, bike safety programs and the like), many times when a suspect ends up in court for a serious crime the judge gives him a slap on the wrist...so why bother in the first place.

But this is just his opinion.

A lot of the red tape in the UK (not just in police depts but also hospitals, schools etc) comes from them having to cover themselves 24/7 from being sued. I remember in the 90s it was popular to go look for a pothole when you broke your arm so you could sue the council. How many times have criminals got off just because their rights weren't read correctly etc? That's the kind of thing they are trying to avoid. Unfortunately it gets out of hand very quickly.
