Default Blood donations...

Do any of you give blood in the States?
Are there paid jobs in the hospitals, donating centres etc. for blood donor or apheresis donor carers?
Or does everyone donate at Red Cross Centres and therefore the blood collectors are volunteers????
Hope someone can clear this up for me

Brits are not allowed to give blood, because of mad cow decease unless they have changed the rules.

Yes. Sorry my mistake.

I should have asked does anyone have any American friends who give blood or does anyone know where I can find out whether blood collection staff in the US are paid, voluntary or both.
In the UK this is a job your are trained for and paid.

Much of the blood donation is handled through the Red Cross, which does have professional (paid) positions available. Though it will depend on where you live as I don't think there are a great number of these jobs (i.e. blood donation specific). Many other donations are simply done at a hospital by hospital staff (nurse I guess).

http://chapters.redcross.org/midatla...mployment.html is for the mid atlantic region, and you can find other regions that match up to where you will be living.

There is no nationality restriction (ie it's based on former residence). And you will find that most of Western Europe is excluded.

I complained at my last job about people who give blood when the "bloodmobile" showed up at the office being given free cookies and OJ. I calmly explained it wasn't my fault that an "accident of birth" denied me the deliciousness of the freshly squeezed juice and much needed cookie goodness.

My HR manager told me to **** off, but still threw a cookie my way

As PS said, blood donations are voluntary. I am a former one gallon donor. However, I am no longer allowed to donation as I have had cancer.

I don't know of anyone who is paid to donate blood. Why are you asking? Do you have a rare blood type that you wish to sell for profit?

I think she wants to get paid to take blood. She's like a nurse or something. Maybe a vampire. Don't know for sure.

Retired Nurse....

It may differ state to state but it is a paid position here for the Gulf Coast regional. You have to be a certified phlebotomist. Does that help the OP?

If you've lived in the UK for 6 month or more, you can't donate blood or organs in the US...so don't think many of us do donate.

You can't get paid for giving blood but you CAN get paid for giving blood plasma....$20 for the first donation and $30 if you return in the same week!
