Subaru seem to be very popular in Boulder, CO.
They do not have the slightly naff image they have had in the UK.
People I know swear by them and we do get lots of snow here. The UK Motor press I think had a downer on them because I think of the permanent 4WD and consequent poor petrol consumption. Not so much of an issue here with such cheap Gas.
I was driving a F150 when my Mum was over, we used a little stool for her to step on so she could get into the Cab! A bit of a change from her Fiesta. The cost per mile in fuel was about half that of my MGF.
There is a Motor Show in Denver in a couple of weeks, a practical in that you drive rather than just look. The Hummer H2 was really easy to drive but surprisingly small inside. You can get one of those for under $50k new, the M60 is extra.
I would agree that most US cars are crap, Trucks much better and I can not quite see the point of SUV's. I would make an exception with the H2, just so American.

My friend in MA was so impressed with my Elantra that she purchased a Hyundai as well (the Sonata) and with heavy snow levels in the Berkshires of MA, she has experienced no problems at all with getting around.
I gave my 1991 Ford Escort to my daughter in 2001 when I got my new car and it is still on the road and virtually trouble free for her as well.
