Congratulations on the move! I think that Redwood City is a good choice for the first year - you really don't want to start out with a long commute while you are still adjusting and settling in (and, yes, Palo Alto is ridiculously expensive).

Oh, and something thing that you need to learn - since you are in Northern California it is not necessary (and, some would say, "wrong") to put the word "the" in front of a Freeway number - it's just "101" (pronounced "one-oh-one") not "the one-oh-one" - to make matters more confusing, the situation is reversed in Southern California where commuters are perpetually stuck in traffic on "the four-oh-five".

But if they don't do this, how else are we supposed to spot Californians when they eventually move to Texas and complain about traffic on "the" 35?

They aren't driving a truck and don't have a gun rack. The women aren't plastered in makeup and don't have 'hair'. They have tattoos and wear black. They have an Obama/Biden bumper sticker on their car.
