Hi guys

We're in need of some new furniture in readiness for moving at the end of June into our permanent abode.

We've been to Fingers, but everything there is so ornate, and well, just not 'us'.

It's a minefield out there. Any suggestions?

How about The Dump?

I have no idea what it is like but they advertise all the time on the local channels. Makes me laugh........If you need furniture come to the Dump!

Yes Penguin, I've looked online! But you know what it's like .. it's like a foreigner in the UK not knowing the difference between Argos, Habitat, Ikea and various department stores. Inside information & word of mouth goes a long way!

I think you just need to look around a bit. The Room Sore, Starr Furniture, even Pier 1 and get some ideas. Sometimes the smaller one off family owned stores have more selection. Good luck..............and yes there really is The Dump

Don't you have an Ikea in Houston? Good cheap basic stuff, and not chintzy US cardboard stuff you get in the usual places. One in Austin/Round Rock if not....

There is one in Houston. Am I the only person who dislikes Ikea.........I think it is overpriced and not well made.

Ikea isn't really up my street so to speak. Didn't like it much in the UK, so doubt I'll like it here!

What sort of stuff do you like?

Surf around and find pictures of things. If you can find a brand name you like, then you can see who sells in your area.

For example, I like well-made furniture of solid wood (no damned MDF). That limits me. I like maple and cherry furniture but would consider walnut, oak and mahogany. Do you like leather or upholstery?

If you like the finer things in life, go to Louis Shanks and have a look.... but don't necessarily buy unless on sale!

PS check out this brand, most of the stuff is not at all ornate but it is extremely well made.
