My "the first few movies that spring to mind (maybe not the best)" list:

Chungking Express
The French Connection
Kind Hearts and Coronets
My Neighbor Totoro (Sprited Away a close second)
Boogie Nights
Seven Samurai (Hidden Fortress a close second)
Goodfellas
Blade Runner
Tampopo
Moonstruck (yes, the one with Cher)
Band of Brothers (do mini-series count?)
The Exorcist (the original)
L'Argent de Poche

Note: this list subject to change in the next five minutes

sounds like we are typing down our favs...I don't think that necessary is the same as best movie ever...I know for a fact that a lot of the movies I love are utter shite
if you had to take into consideration...cast...setting..special effects( if any) wardrobe, plot, characters etc etc which movie would be your one choice as best movie of all time? can you do it can you narrow it down...?

Tuff to really narrow it down, because different years, different occasions.
Swiss family, when I was a kid.

James Bond, when in my teens.

Recent movies, maybe Shawshank Redemption.
Last few years Lord of the Rings, held us in our seats for 3 x 3 hours.
I guess, we would need to split them in to Genres.

I liked the Sixth Sense because I didn't see the twist coming. And thats exactly why I didn't like the Usual Suspects - way, way, way too easy to figure out who Keyser Soze was (lets see - there was only one member of the gang who survived and was telling the story - it couldn't be, could it?)

I really liked Se7en - thats probably at the top of my list. I also liked Saving Private Ryan for the realism in the D-Day landing scenes.

OK so we are looking at best movie rather than favourite which as noted are different, so IMHO i offer my top five nominations for your consideration:

1. Casablanca
2. Shawshank Redemption
3. Some like it Hot
4. Godfather II
5. Its a wonderful life
