Best in what way?
To meet expat Brits, or as a place for them to live?

I live outside Seattle and after living in North VA would say there were a lot more birts here (or should say I have come in contact with) and it certainly is a lot more cosmopolitan.

Its certainly more beautiful here (than elsewhere I lived in the States which is great as I love natural beauty) and there is public transit here which will get better, and if you don't like right wing politics (which I think is what you are saying) its quite liberal here. People here do walk a lot and read a lot. Sense of humour is a bout the same as elsewhere in the US.

Do find the midwest and VA to have people initially 'warmer' to you like the South which they aren't here which I miss (though once you get to know them its the same as in the UK - fine )
And they don't ask about your accent all the time here which is great.

If you stick around here for a while, or just browse through a few months worth of postings you will discover that about the only thing that almost all expat Brits have in common is that they started out living in the UK but they currently live somewhere else. At that point the similarity ends ...

I happen to find my current location - Santa Cruz, California (small-ish university town on the coast about 80 miles south of San Francisco) to be ideal for me (a 50 something gay male software engineer who works "over the hill" in Mountain View for a certain large internet software company).

It isn't for everyone, though, and I am sure that there are people here who wouldn't be caught dead in the place ...

It just didn't make much sense.

How would you respond if someone asked you what was the best major metropolitan area for US citizens?

well an analogous question would be the best in for us citizens in another country. narrowing it down would help but there are certain critieria one could use ie weather, cost of living, public transport, people etc that come to mind. perhaps i'd make suggestions and then ask to narrow it down.
