If that doesn't work, have you tried contacting any of the hotels explaining what you're doing? Perhaps they would offer a discount, particularly for someone staying 16 nights.

It was a great recommendation. But if I found the correct place, rooms start at $106 a night - I got a telephone quote for my dates.

Ozzidoc....

Have you tried actually contacting Stanford directly to explain your situation and ask for help or recommendations? The Stanford switchboard/operator might be a good easy first contact to find out who exactly to speak to about temporary housing needs, if there isn't someone you've been dealing with directly (were you 'hired' for instance, as a volunteer? So who hired you?) who you could be asking these questions of.

Just a quick Google search for 'stanford hospital volunteer accommodation' came up with:

http://www.cardinalhotel.com/html/ca...l-deal-pkg.asp

Manager's special = European style rooms with shared hallway bath $69.00 + tax (normally $80-$90)

Can very possibly negotiate better price. If not, then ask them where you might get a more affordable price...

Just a bit further away in the Los Altos Hills - transport would be an issue, and you'd need to be a nature lover , but prices from $22 per bed, shared kitchen facilities. Useful at the least for a comparable, or something to fall back on if necessary.

I would be really surprised though if Stanford itself didn't either have, or know of, temporary dorm-type or other budget accommodation nearby for students or visitors or volunteers... They'd at least know where you'd get a discount for being a volunteer..

Thank you thank you! I have a (little) car, so transport isn't an issue...tho maybe the cost of parking on the Stanford campus might be.....

I'll keep everyone posted!

what's the parking fines like in the area?

I know in Boston, it's often cheaper to pay the parking fines than pay for a days parking...just saying like

I would suggest you could bunk up with my nephew and his roomies - but he has smelly feet Let us know if you get sorted.

Hi everyone

So, I'm still looking. The Stanford people recommended their guest house - the SLAC - where prices are about $100 a night

I've found somewhere that's four miles from the campus and should be a fairly easy cycle ride (in the dark ) each way at $42pn plus tax.

I haven't booked it yet, but will do so in the next day or so.

(The reason that I'm being so tightfisted with our/hubby's cash, is that we're buying a 4BR house. Our 1BR condo is too small for us. The dodgy-ish Californian economy means that we're getting the new place at a good price, but can't sell our current one as it's currently under water.)

Are there no BE members in that area that could loan you a couch for a couple of weeks?

Why is your condo under water?

Apparently not

Under water = currently worth less than the mortgage. The value dropped by 120K.
