Question Bed/sofa/floor needed in Stanford in Dec for 16 nights!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out or point me in the direction of very cheap accommodation.

I've been lucky enough to obtain a two-week voluntary placement at one of the Stanford Uni hospitals, commencing 7th December.

I'm happy to pay my way, but not happy to pay the hotel rates that I've been quoted.

All help and suggestions welcome!!

Youth hostel?

Couch Surfing? http://www.couchsurfing.org/

YMCA?

College dorms? It's a college area, students are slackers and bound to have buggered off by then surely?

My nephew attends Stanford - I can email him and ask if he knows of anywhere? Congrats by the way!

Thanks guys

I've looked into couch surfing in the past. I'd happily do it, but hubby isn't keen. If I/we registered we'd have to open up our place to people. Also, a couch surfer was murdered in England (Leeds?) last week.

Travelzoo has cheap hotels, but still around $100 for the cheapest in the area. Looks like some temporary stuff on craigslist: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/sub/1449902546.html

Thanks augigi

I've been looking at craig's list sporadically - I suspect that's ultimately the way that I'll go. It's still a bit expensive for an unemployed housewife though

E,

We stayed at a very nice B&B in Jan just up the road from Stanford. It was USD129 a nite tho. Let me know if you want further details and I'll dig them out.

I worked near there; sometimes, if I needed to spend the night rather than drive home to the East Bay, I would stay at the "Good Nite Inn", just off 101 in Redwood City. I just did a quick search on Hotels.com, it came up as 'starting at $44', which sounds about right. It is quite basic but has clean sheets, etc. If you do a search on Hotels.com for 'Redwood City, CA' and then sort lowest to highest, you'll see two in the <$50 range (Good Nite Inn and Days Inn) that I would say were 'acceptable'.

Rooms for rent in the student community would probably be cheaper, but - not sure how to find them; craigslist comes to mind ...

Since students will be away, I would suspect you might be able to find an someone who is going home for the holidays and would be interested in subletting their off-campus room to you for a few weeks. Of course you are not interested in a beer-soaked student flat, but I suspect there might be some graduate students who are a bit better off and could offer you something at a cheap rate.

The student paper is here. They have classified. I bet if you ran an ad you'd get plenty of responses.

I stayed at a Motel 6 around Palo Alto once (maybe Sunnyvale). Was ok until the person next door arrived. She turned tricks for about four hours for construction workers. Was a bit loud.

Check for a place that does corporate rentals. They are furnished apartments that can be rented by the week or month. Long stay or extended stay hotels as well.

Also check Craigslist for furnished rooms by the week. This might be the perfect solution for the two of you.

Also try

http://www.biddingfortravel.com and http://www.betterbidding.com

You get a guide (listed in alphabetical order of State name) of what people paid when they put in bids on Priceline and Hotwire where you choose to "name your own price".

Last year I got the Hyatt Hotel in Princeton for $38
