So this is where diplomacy comes into play.
I'm sure now UGA realizes that the monkey reference was just Brit speak (usually partly a term of endearment) but we also have to realize that it does have a different meaning here (in some areas more than others)so it was understandable that she called it out.
Hopefully it hasn't upset her too much and she will feel comfortable with the explanation and all will be well again.
JG....I tend to call people "cheeky gits" When said with a big grin it usually goes down well

It's a slur if used to refer to blacks. If you're teasing your kids for climbing all over the furniture, or if making a generic reference to dumb people, as Bob was, then it isn't. Context matters for this one, it's not universally offensive.

I know it is not, and you know it is not, and most of the people on here know it is not, but some people do not. I think it may have caught her off-guard. And we know Bob is definately not racist.

It can and is used as a racist remark in Britain as well as in the US, remember all those footie hooligans making monkey noises to black footballers. But I know in this context Bob didn't use it that way.

I agree with that. I think that there definitely have been some offensive remarks made lately and perhaps sensitivity is high.

I am thrilled that Obama got elected President Elect.This country really does need a change for the better and in my heart I believe he is the man to do it.He is cool,calm and collected.His wife is beautiful and they will make a terrific couple in the White House,bringing poise,style and class to America for a change.They will have a very long road ahead of them and things won't be done in a day or two,but they or should I say he will make every endeavor to keep his promises.And in my book,race does not come into that.OMO

Bloody hell... I thought it was bad over here with PC poo - but it`s worse over there...you obviously can`t say boo to a goose (or in this case a monkey) without being put in the stocks and pelted with rotten veg!
I paged back to see what Racist Bob had said - only to find that Unracist Bob had suggested that a dumb (?) animal could`ve won the last election (and obviously did!!
