Does anyone know the type of cheese used in these. My son adored them back in the late 90s cheers

Some kind of imitation cheddar I would imagine. They were bloody lovely though.

Halloumi is a soft curd-like cheese from Cyprus, free of rennet and safe for vegetarians who do not eat rennet. Not sure how the bacon would work there?

Many similar cheeses are prepared by dairy and goat farmers in Canada and the United States. For legal proprietary reasons, these cheeses are usually called "Halloumi-style" or "grillable" cheeses.

I'm interested in what Halloumi-style or grillable cheese is called in the US? I live in the northeast US and in spite of looking and enquiring in many delis & supermarkets for the last couple of years, have never found any cheese even close to Halloumi.

American recipes I have seen state that everything from Monteray Jack to feta to mozzarella can be substituted, but that's crazy, since none of those are "grillable" the way Halloumi is. (None are "squeaky" like Halloumi either.)

Hmmm, halfway between Framingham & Worcester, who knew? Definitely need a road trip. Thanks!

I have heard that some Whole Foods have it, but none I have been able to check carry it. Most grocery store managers I have asked have never heard of it. Yet a friend in CA says it's been at more than one deli near her.

It works by wrapping it in bacon

Kind of like Yorkshire Fettel, which used to be called Yorkshire Feta!

Not worth the road trip, nightmare to drive and a hole....the whole of Rt9...saying that, the boozer is an amazing shop but it's not that big. Awesome place for craft beers though. If you're heading this far, might as well go to the Cheese shop in Concord :/

Saying that, you can get the cheese in Trader Joes, Wholefoods, Wegmans and Hannafords. If the ones by you don't, you can ask them to get it and they will.

There are a lot of small dairy cheese places in MA/NH/VT who make various cheeses too, that ship, but they do tend to be more expensive, but locally at least we can find them in Hannafords quite often and the local farmers markets, though that tends to be in the summer.....but one local dairy farm to us does do $1 ice cream scoops, which is handy

Yeah, they probably won't get it at our nearest TJ because I've asked the manager & he had not heard of it. I wrote it out for him and asked him to, and he said he'd see what he could do, but I don't have much hope.

I've heard it can easily be found in Boston area supermarkets and delis, especially if there are Greek/Middle Eastern folks living nearby, or Brazilian (though I'm not certain the Brazilian-style queso is the same, but perhaps close). But my area is a bit of an ethnic food desert. Lots of Italian & some Portuguese foods, yes! Oriental & Middle Eastern delicacies, no!

Over the Christmas break I may try to get into the Boston metro area & see what I can find. (Dying for senbei & some good frozen gyoza too.)

Aye, it's all over the place around here, loads of Brazilian stores too. Can't say if it's the same but it certainly looks it.

There's a cracking, but small little Middle Eastern grocery store in Northborough, just past the centre of town on Rt20 at the lights. You could hit this on the way home to CT via I-495 as it's not a big side step.

H-Mart is an amazing Korean/Asian grocery store that's huge, in Burlington, just the other side of I-95 from the mall and that's a quick shot up the road if you were in Boston. Plus it's a couple minutes away from Lincoln/Concord/Acton if you're into all that historical guff, plus it's all very pretty for Christmas in the area.

Thanks for the helpful tips, Bob! Yes, I'd rather stay this (west) side of the I-95 ring road if I can. Bad things seem to happen when I venture over that line ... like getting so lost or so stuck in traffic.
