U.S. authorities told a British Airways flight bound for New York to turn back on Wednesday because they said there was a suspected militant on board, although London police later released him without charge.

While I appreciate that not everyone does this or has the means to do this, it'd save a lot of hassle.

EU data protection laws prevent the sharing of passenger info with the US authorities. To circumvent this, the passenger list is passed onto the US after the plane has left the EU airspace.

apparently, airlines are afraid of being sued by passengers. Because of bad politics, both the EU and the US have taken a hard stance on this issue.

Well why? I mean given the choice, either we land in London or in Long Island Sound, what would you choose?
