We were on honeymoon last year and my wife had passport in new name but cards in old name - explained that names didn't match but none of the clerks we encountered cared!!

I must admit the stores that request ID seem wierd - asked for 20 bux worth of groceries but for for 1000 bux of consumer electronics!!

Its a good point - do they check the names match - probably not! My advice is get a card with photo on it (Bank of America do this) then you never get asked and it prevents fraud properly - friend of mine had her handbag nicked and this was the only card that wasn't used illegally (obviously most cards have protection anyway).

And pray tell how this protects me if my card is stolen?

How can the store be penalized for following Visa's very own procedures which, generally, do not include an ID check?

Think you need to put your thinking cap on here.

Yes and fatbrit called him/her out.

I don't mind showing ID in a supermarket like Dominicks or Publix, but I don't like showing it in some dodgy little shop for the same reasons as fatbrit.

It protects you cos if they actually compare the names on card and photo id (BIG if) then it will stop the card being used by the robbing b'stard who nicked your card

Not convinced. I lent my Sam's Club (photo id) to someone who's staying with us so that they could do our shopping. There's me - blonde, fair-skinned and English, her, black hair, dark-skinned and Mexican - and the cashier looked at the card, looked at her, and never even said anything.

Also, photo IDs are a mouse click and printer away. Can churn them out on a thousand-buck computer and printer all day.

Weird thing is, I've never been asked for ID for general purposes, only when buying booze and dvd's...now that pisses me off *l* oh, and at Sam's club, almost wouldn't let me buy a bottle of vermouth, which was on sale for $3 because the missus was with me and didn't have photo ID...what a joke...State law in maine only requires ID for person buying the booze...not to mention when you sign up you have to verify your age is over 21....muppets...

Or if you cancelled the card, it wouldn't work anyway....but credit card protection is a bit naff over here...mbna one this one at least offers half decent protection, even if they don't advertise it...

Should have asked for a dollar then, as there supposed to thank you buy name after you pay

You're assuming that cashiers have the intelligence to remember parts of the information on the ID that you offer them...

I don't mind showing picture ID to verify my identity when making credit card purchases.

I would make a fuss if a copy was made of that ID or even worse, it was taken away, out of my sight.

BTW- I hope no-one here has their Social Security Number listed on their driving license. This is a very bad idea.

Progress report:

Just challenged for photo ID in Big Lots. Cashier backed off immediately when I refused ID and suggested she call the manager. This is going to be fun...

Memory doesn't require much intelligence. A week's memory training and most people will be able to memorize till they have the opportunity to write it down.
