Default April 1st - tobacco taxes through the roof.

Can't remember how much, but it's through the roof. It's for "The Children".*

I quit a week ago Friday. Any of you guys still smerk?

All they'll succeed in doing is creating a lucrative black market. And tax revenue will go down. Bought an $8 pack in New York last year.

I'm all for quitting smoking, although the arguments open as to whether smokers cost the country more, because they do die younger.

But what's next? What other taxes are there in the pipeline? Remember, we won't face tax increases if we make under 250,000... Stealth taxes, people. Government has learned from the UK, it would seem. Now that's Change I can believe in.

... or smokers will pick up a new habit that's cheaper and still addictive.

I'd say that the health care and associated costs related to smokers does cost the US more because people live with smoking related health issues for a while before they expire, unlike fatal car accidents.

Good for you on giving up smoking!
I'm a smoker, found out yesterday that it is the State that is increasing the taxes, presumably, it will be an individual States choice as to the amount of the increase? I buy my ciggies on the base here, and there is no State taxes on them, so I only pay an increase if the tax increase is federal. Now I have all my 'smoking' neighbors asking me to buy their ciggies too! It's illegal for me to do that, so I won't, but I do feel for them. In the Uk the US bases rationed the cigarette sales,(and alcohol) you could only buy 2 cartons every ten days (if I remember right) because they were like $5 a carton at the time and people were selling them off base. I can see that happening again, if prices keep going up, it's going to be 62 cents on a pack here.

I applaud you for quitting, you should be over the worst by now, but the statement above must be taken in a much broader context. The lists of ways in which people contribute to the country's wealth, and ways in which they diminish the country's wealth are very long.
