Default Applying for a Social Security Number

Hello

I am a UK citizen and I am looking to move to Boston early next year with my husband who has dual UK and US citizenship. I am in the process of applying for a spousal visa.

I have been doing some research but something that is not yet clear to me is whether it is possible to apply for a social security number prior to moving to the US. I would prefer to try and secure employment prior to moving to the US as I am the main breadwinner. I have read a lot of comments of it taking a long time for people to get a SSN which worries me.

If I'm unable to secure employment prior to moving, then we will need to save as much as possible and my husband will need to try and secure employment.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Aisling

No, it is not.

When you fill out your Immigrant Visa application, there will be a box to check, asking if you want them to assign a SSN. Check "yes". But you still won't get the SSN or SS card until you physically arrive in the USA.
