Default Apart from the $$$ why do they insist on bldg wooden houses?

Every day on the news I hear of yet another family that have died due to a house fire. Why do they build these timber homes that burn down in minutes? When we first moved into our house a friend said 'so good that you have more than one staircase, makes it easier to get out when the house catches fire' :scared: Very reassuring. Not to mention that they give little protection in floods, tornadoes, landslides etc.

In California wood frame and stucco is best for absorbing earthquake shock - brick is too rigid and doesn't flex

I hate these stick houses. Timber framed houses are cheaper and require less skilled workers to put it together. The sheetrock (plasterboard to you and I) is they only thing in the house that isnt flammable. They dont seal wall voids properly here, so fires can spread from room to room faster.

They are also quicker to build so you save on the amount of labour required as well as the hourly rates.

hmm exactly my question...i've asked builders etc and they don't know must be the $$$$$...crap houses and the roofs are like we'd put on our garden sheds...lol our last house had a posh red tiled roof not this one...everyday we hear of another one burning down...thought with hurricanes the building regs (lol) would enforce a much more substantial brick built home
