Anyone know St Louis?
Hi Guys,
My wife and i would really appreciate some real local info on St Louis, Mo.
We are currently living in Florida, but due to a change in circumstances we`re probably gonna have to move to St Louis.
Any info on good/bad neighborhoods, property prices, any info on good " British" pubs would greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
Can't really tell you any specifics other than a few observations on my two dozen or so trips to and through St. Louis (lots of storms, airport serves quite a few places, some fun places down by the Arch).
However, there is another site that is excellant for these sorts of questions:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/st-louis/
Even if you don't post over there, I'd encourage you to read some of the other messages. A lot of very specific St. Louis moving issues.
(By the way, that site has info on every state and most major cities, for others with similar questions).
Good luck.

I had a post about pubs a while back it'll take me a few minutes to find it...
Do you have kids that will be in school? Are you looking for rural, urban, close to work, new construction or older homes with more "character"?

I love it there. It's a nice town........ If she stays there I'll prolly be moving there too.
Although for some reason she has her heart set on Columbus Ohio

Let me know what you think of that place I told you about, if you make it there. I can't recall ever seeing a Union Jack in the place, (or much "decor" at all actually, now that I think about it) but the menu is very much inspired by Brit chow and the beer (brewed onsite) is very good. My only complaint is that in the years I've been going there, the fish and chips has risen to 13 bucks for a whole order and it sure seems like there's more chips and less fish than there used to be!:curse: It's still very good though. The Oatmeal Stout goes very well with it.

I've been to st louis and i thought a lot of it was a bit bleak and depressing.
Fun bars down by the river/under the arches though
could well be the area of town my mate lived in and we travelled through

Re: Anyone know St Louis?
Thanks everyone.
Just been reading thru the city-data.com site. Got some good info on there, not just about St. Louis, but other US cities. Seems Florissant, Hazelwood, Ferguson, University Park, Mehlville, Lindberg,Clayton, would be areas we would be interested in. Definitely not East St. Louis! I have been to St. Louis a couple times, but only on day visits to watch the cardinals etc.
Kind of looking for homes with a bit of character, rather than the "cookie cutter" kind of homes you tend to get in FL. We want to be close enough to downtown to be able to appreciate it,and also for me jobwise, but far enough away from the some of the not so nice aspects.
As for Brit pubs. I think i`ll just have to do a reccie trip of bars and pubs.

I'd forget about Ferguson and Florrisant. Hazlewood is an older, established 'burb with some nice parts but not much in the way of character. Mehlville and Lindberg are about the same as Hazlewood but on the extreme south side of the metro area as Hazlewood is on the north.
I would look at places in Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Shrewsbury and some areas of the city proper such as "The Hill" and "St. Louis Hills" neighborhoods. There are gorgeous old homes in many other rehabbed areas of the city and I can give info on those as well, but they are usually an oasis in the middle of a somewhat dodgy area. It also depends on whether you have kids or not and your budget.
I'll post some more links as I can.
Typical "St. Louis Hills" home:

Hey I like St Louis, what i have seen of it so far (ie rehabbed arches area). Its living out in the MO sticks I am a wee bit more worried about. Mind you the beef's cheap but we already went over that.

To tell you the truth I'm worried about you as well! Coming from CT to Washington will probably come with a good dose of culture shock. Really though, Washington is close enough that you could be in the city whenever you want. You'll be in kind of a best of both worlds situation.
