I'm just starting now, after being here a month. There was a position open that might have been tailor made for me, but they decided to cancel it before I applied

So, I'm working on my resume - just need to write a suitably boastful introduction and my next priority has to be getting a drivers licence.

I'm not at the minute (but who knows for how long in this economy - and very few can say otherwise) - but have had a lot of experience with job hunting here. Same as what most others have said, it's rough at the best of times, and more so right now.

The deafening silence from countless applications is pretty much par for the course, as is jumping through hoops and being strung along with advertised prospective positions that turn out to be nothing etc. Not to mention the very annoying practice of not even indicating salary ranges on the job ads, etc.

It is not fun at all, is most discouraging and can take months and months - but eventually, you'll be in the right place at the right time! Network all you can; try and circumvent HR departments by clever use of resources to identify who your direct manager might be - usually if you can identify and send people an email/call about a job you've just applied for, you will be well received for going that extra distance and make yourself worth a look irrespective of the HR screen.

Good luck with it all!

Here's a good listing off craigslist; might be right for some folk here (self included!).

Ideal candidate would have no regard for how they come across, inability to juggle several projects at once and the communication skills of gnat. Enough knowledge of the green industry to be dangerous a plus. Sense of humor required.

around my neck of the woods that's not quite working out as they've been culling loads of healthcare jobs....probably because there's just so many in that area around here I guess.

I'm sure there's some fallout caused by folks not being able to afford to have their health seen to. Still.... I am pondering this:

* agriculture-based economy
* manufacturing-based economy
* knowledge-based economy

What's next?

I arrived in the USA a little over a month ago, to marry my American fiancée. I've only been job hunting for a fortnight, but I'm not having much luck - my background is in software development, and there isn't much work for that around here. If only I were a nurse, or a doctor, or a medical billing specialist, I'd be sorted...

Been looking on and off for a year now. It really annoys me that you dont even get "thanks but no thanks" letters / emails. Especially when you have taken the time time to fill in the online application form for company A which looks exactly the same as the one you filled in for companies X, Y and Z, which in itself leaves me feeling like I've had deja-vu for the last 3 hours or so!!

The one interview I've had was 4 months after I applied for the job! And I thought recruitment processes in the NHS was bad!!

something i have been pondering over and not come to a decision about yet is online applications. The email address is Aol.com. or yahoo.com or some such like. I dont like the idea that I am sending someone a copy of my life history and it probably ending up in some seedy guys basement who is just collating info on people. is it just me?

If they don't have a professional email address then I wouldn't send them my info, probably a recruiter culling info or maybe some weirdo.

I'm in Erie, PA for the next year, while my wife finishes nursing school. I never really anticipated moving to a city with no software industry - I like the sound of where you are...

How far are you from Pittsburgh? Carnegie Mellon has a lot of talent and there's quite a few coder jobs out there and I think Eutechnyx were setting up a tech studio there, they're based around Newcastle, do racing games.

Anyway, loads of jobs in Boston and out towards Waltham, pretty much any tech firm out there has a office down here, some even way out in the burbs, Mathworks and Cognex are based where I live and they're hiring like crazy.
