Anybody converted UK teaching qualifications to teach in TX?
 

Hi,

I gather this varies by state and have seen other threads which discussed NY and MA. My better half is a qualified teacher in UK (BA and PGCE) and interested in at least having the option of teaching once her employment authorisation comes through (touch wood). If anyone or their partner has managed to convert their qualification, we would love to hear from you as to cost, time needed and whether it was actually worth it versus subbing.

Hi. She would need to look into getting a Texas teachers license, but be warned Texas has just announced massive teaching cuts, it's reported that Austin alone will be losing 12,000 teachers and subs are very poorly paid.

Thanks for the response. We are fortunate in that there is work to be had in the school district we are in. The money side would be nice but isn't the motivation and so if it ends up being subbing, that isn't the end of the world.

My husband had over 10 years of teaching experience before moving over here to live with me. At the time (years ago), SC was one of 5 states that did not accept WES "translations" of credentials. So, basically SC would have required a new US based bachelor's degree. Substitutes in my state make about $9 per hour. My husband works in a different field now. HTH!

Depending on the subject, it'll probably be better being a home tutor and paying for liability insurance...

Just look up the state regulations on google to see what they'll require and what PRAXIS score they'll look for. Depending on the standards and desperation, it might be really high score or something so low that a mashed up worm could pass.
