I hate the phrase 'pet dander'. My OH has always suffered with allergies to animals so stands to reason I asked him if we could have a dog. anyway he said yes he was sure he would overcome his allergies in time. So we got the dog and after a couple of weeks of him nearly dying of asthma he was fine and has been ever since. Whereas our friends have a dog and a cat and each of them is allergic to one of them so they have been taking prescription medication from their Doctor for years.

Glad someone else thinks that!

I've never heard so many lame excuses to take time off work to go and see a doctor; if I say I've got a bit of a headache someone always suggests I go and see the doctor.

maybe its because the holiday entitlement in this country is so crap that everyone has to pretend they have allergies in order to get a reasonable amount of time off work..
but yes I agree too they're all hypochondriacs..

But why are you so surprised at the choice of available medications? Thats one of the things that hit me as a consumer over here, there is (generally speaking) a wider variety of individual product types (e.g. breakfast cereals). However, I do find the overall range of products is much smaller in my local supermarket (Safeway) than in a typical UK supermarket.
I was just talking about this with my OH the other day! The baking aisle in Safeway, for example - half of it is dedicated to different brands of low cal sugar and the other half is full of different brands of pre-mixed, just add egg and water, muffins. But can I get the wherewithall to make my own cakes? Can I buggery. No ground almonds, no coffee essence etc etc. You have to go to specialised shops for the more "exotic" items which I just used to be able to pick up at Tesco.

Another thing I noticed over here with regard to dentistry. Everyone over here knows the drug they use to numb your mouth is novocaine. I had often received it while visiting dentists in the UK (lots o fillings - keeping up the Brit sterotype), but had no flippin' idea what it was called. Anyone else notice that?
I think that's because the drug companies advertise their products over here - "Ask your doctor/dentist for product XYZ" - on the TV and in mags etc. That gives the general public more of an awareness of the brand names I suppose.

:
Ha, spot on - out of 8 or 9 kids in my 2 year olds babygroup, he is the ONLY one that hasn't been tested for allergies....never needed to. The others, soon as they have a sniffle, they're off to get tested. Never heard of colds then?

My 4 year old doesn't like veg. Takes broccoli and spinach and not a lot else. Not exactly the end of the world, fairly normal at this age, can live with it and gradually persuade him over. I just happened to glance at the allergy board at his pre-school one day (never normally take any notice of it) and saw they had him down as allergic to fruit and veg!!!! WTF?
Me - Where did that come from?
School - Err, he told us!!!
Me - He's 4 year old FFS.

Turns out they'd stopped giving him fruit or veg about 2 months earlier and forgotten to tell us...

Man colds are potentially deadly and must be taken seriously, nothing worse than a Man cold, no siree.

So because your husband made a big deal over a cold, every American is branished with the same brush? Wow, I'll have to tell my father, who never took a day off sick for a cold, and wouldn't dream of it.....of course I know a few others that are a bit more hearty than what you've described as well....
