Kate came up against some nasty remarks when we were over there last month. I sat in a pub with Kate, the kid's and my 90 year old Dad and he introduced us to one of his friends who chatted nicely to me then realised kate was American and insulted her right in front of everyone ... She met her match there though
She was in Durham later that week and went into a chip shop with friends who told her not to talk because the locals hate Americans and they didn't want a scene.

The lady's either exaggerating or got a real problem with her self-esteem. Probably better for all parties that she leaves the UK. She just can't manage being amongst with foreigners (which is kind of ironic if you look at the mix in the US these days)...

I'm assuming she likes to be addressed as Ms Cox, not miss or mrs that she is one of those hardcore feminist types. "Oh my god this thug is out of control, I can break it up" 'SMACK'
shut you up didn't it love. I've seen a bloke go backwards through a kebab shop window not a tear was shed.

Oh boo hoo.
Spot on sister.
Ouch!
Yup, heard that one before.
And the best yet?
There you have it.
American kids have sewn maple leaves onto their backpacks for decades.
I am Japanese and have lived in this country since I was three. I have experienced various kinds of verbal taunts and racist remarks all throughout my life. ........ They should understand that to be a foreigner in any other country will invite those jingoistic and hateful to target them no matter what.

I would agree that in general Americans are a loathsome, naive, petulant bunch, but then the fact that we in Britain allow ourselves to be so influenced by them makes us 10 times worse.

My grandfather fought here in WWII and sometimes I think of the irony that it is their freedom he secured than makes me feel so insecure in Europe.

As a rule, any opinion expressed in a British pub should be ignored.

Ok, I lived there for over 5 years, and yes I came across some mild harassment. But, we didn't go out much and I suppose that's why I never came across anything more than I did. My daughter, on the other hand, came across a few drunken louts. She even went out with a lad who hated Americans, but liked her. Kind of like my MIL. Anyway, in the end, she is still living there and enjoys it and can't ever see herself coming back here, I guess it can't be too bad.

I wonder how much all of this will stop as soon as the political situation changes a little. People seem to forget that Bush is outta there in two years...
