Another Virginia political embarrassment
You'd think after the whole "macaca" incident this summer, Virginia politicians would have learned to keep their mouths shut. But no, apparently not. Here's the most recent stupid comment to come from a Virginian politician, this time Rep. Virgil Goode:
Congressman stands by remarks about Muslims
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican lawmaker on Thursday stood by his warning that unless there is a crackdown on immigration, more Muslims like an incoming Minnesota Democrat would place theirs hands on the Koran at congressional swearing-in ceremonies.
"...I'm for restricting immigration so that we don't have a majority of Muslims elected to the United States House of Representatives," Goode said in an interview with Fox TV.
Firstly, there is only ONE Muslim representative in Congress (and he is NOT an immigrant -- he's a US-born citizen who converted to Islam many years ago), and he was JUST elected. It took until 2006 for a Muslim to be elected to the House, so I don't know why that's even an issue (not that it should be, anyway).
Secondly, what Goode is REALLY saying is that he doesn't value democracy. He said he doesn't want "a majority of Muslims ELECTED" to the House. That would never happen anyway, but even if that were possible, then someone who truly supports democracy would support the people's choice. If the people choose to elect Muslims to represent them in government, then as a supporter of democracy he would support their choice, not try to take that option away from them.
This kind of thing is so irritating, because this gives ALL Virginians a REALLY bad rap, makes us all look like ignorant, close-minded bigots.
