Look again at California and Florida.

Perhaps BG has been out of the UK for too long, you should see what the UK is like these days. As for our wonderful NHS, it is a great system but completely rundown and overwhelmed.

The UK is in the toilet, saddled with crime, public debt and an incoming govt whose stated aim is to demolish any last notion of public service left and put up taxes as well.

Sure the US has plenty of problems, but its rose tinted glasses to think the UK is wonderful, don't believe me, come back for a month or two. You ll be clamouring to get the first seat on the plane.
You come out with some very odd statements.

You said 'cali is on the left at the top , and fl is left at the bottom'.

Cali is not top left...it's central/south west coast (left). Florida is not left at the bottom...it's South East (that would be bottom right).

Alaska is north west of Canada...not above Canada.

You're really a barrel of laughs, aren't you?

Why don't you take the hint and get a map out? You'll find that Alaska is to the West of canada (not North, as you say), California can be found in the bottom (bottom!!! not top) left corner of the map of the USA (yes, it borders Mexico) and Florida in the bottom right corner (you got that right). The distance between Florida and Mexico is, at best, around 500 miles.....

I was curious about the distance you mentioned. Pensacola to Piedras Negras which is near enough a straight line from closest borders is 860 miles according to google! :-D

I'm currently studying Chemical Engineering and have 2 more years to go. that's got to count as a skilled worker right? I'm looking at specialising in Pharmaceuticals, but if it will make it easier to find a job i would consider going into food, or even defence if there are such openings for say munitions development. So for people who don't know what Chem Eng is, it's the process of turning raw and less valuable materials (Oil, Chemicals, ....) into more valuable and useful ones (Petrol, fuels, Foods, Pharmaceuticals). I'm guessing the fuels market would be more towards Texas and southern oil drilling states.

I'm looking at living up north, Cali or Fl if possible, and firstly was wondering if anyone knows of either of these states having an abundance of this type of work? Also what are the salary's like? (in England after graduation I would start on around £30k, after about 5 years I could get chartered and my salary rises to around £45-50k and then increases with experience). And the one asked right at the start, is this type of skill sought after in the us and will it make getting a green card easier? If the Engineering jobs just aren't there, my degree would also let me move into math related careers such as finance since our course is highly math based and a lot of graduates take this route instead of the engineering route.

Thank you all for your replies and any information is welcomed.

Google "ACS salary survey" for some useful info. Keep in mind that the last surveys were before the big downturn, and IMHO the ones who respond to salary surveys are generally the ones making better money.

In science and engineering, getting a job in the US with limited experience is usually achieved through studying in the US first. You may want to investigate the timeline for H1B visas - there are limited windows for getting out of student /OPT status into a real job.

Also, at least in science, you can often be paid to to an advanced degree. Plus, the US often requires a higher level of degree to do a job than you might expect in the UK.

Finally, your geography skills are troubling.

No wonder the Brits couldn't figure me out when I told them I lived in Oregon, "the one above California and below Seattle".

OP, all of Great Britain fits inside Oregon with room to spare. And a population of about 3.5 million.

No, no, you've got it all wrong.

Florida is just to the bottom left middle, just above Canada. It's California that's just west of the east bit. And for god's sake don't even think of Oregon. Why anyone would want to live on an island in the middle of a huge lake is beyond me....

Or rather, rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise.
