Yes this is definitely one of your options. We have about a dozen chem engers from India and China where I work who are here on the H1 visa. They all came to us having done a masters or PhD here in the US then applied for our job postings.
As i understand it though, if they lose their job, they lose their visa and have to go home.
I'm also a chemical engineer and you definitely are in a better field than most to get here, but i cheated and married an american girl to get my GC. i didn't even have any desire to live here, it just sort of happened.

I get a scholarship from my current university (Manchester) which will mean I should have around £15-20k after I graduate which I could put towards a Masters in the US.

My response to your posts is to try and blow away the popular misconceptions and stereotypes before you set your heart on this.
I mean the reference to Texas and the rose tinted long term thing about raising family etc (And the notion of graduating and walking into 30k and beyond as an apparent given)
Look up Chevron. Petro company with massive presence in the bay area as I understand. Not very Texan. Certainly more out there.
And the country really is so big that plans for one area would probably need to be completely rethought for another.
Good luck. I hope you find what you're looking for though.

Haha ... I know cali is west coast ... and florida is east coast at the bottom... I only ever look at Everything north of mexico and south of Alaska. But my geog is pretty poor to be honest! Not as bad as a 17 year old American girl i spoke to the other day though, who thought England was a city in Europe!

Well... that would include all of Canada which, while many Americans think it's the 51st state (or at the very least, a poor stepchild), is not part of the US.
The US is over 40 times larger than the entire UK... indeed, 31 of the 50 states are larger than England!
It sounds as though you'll fit in right well over here!

You've been given some great advice already re getting your masters degree in the USA, that would seem to be your only realistic option in the near future.
If you are serious about getting your masters in the USA, then you've got a couple of years to research where the best places are for you to study to give you the best advantage when it comes to finding a job that will sponsor you for that all important visa.

Here, the taxes are going up, they're trying to invent a not-as-good-as-the-NHS NHS, joblessness is through the roof with no end in sight, and the country is run by an innumerate moron who thinks he can spend all the cash he wants, and just print more.
Take your time getting here and see if you still want to be bothered with it when the time comes.

Perhaps BG has been out of the UK for too long, you should see what the UK is like these days. As for our wonderful NHS, it is a great system but completely rundown and overwhelmed.
The UK is in the toilet, saddled with crime, public debt and an incoming govt whose stated aim is to demolish any last notion of public service left and put up taxes as well.
Sure the US has plenty of problems, but its rose tinted glasses to think the UK is wonderful, don't believe me, come back for a month or two. You ll be clamouring to get the first seat on the plane.

I don't think anywhere is fantastic to live right now.

The "up side" of coming over on an inter company transfer is that you can negotiate vacation time (to line up with what you'd be leaving in the UK)

Come on! NO American with any functioning brain cells -- much less a masters degree -- would think that California and Florida are somehow wedged between South Dakota and Wyoming. Personally I think it's kind of scary that someone has decided to move somewhere but doesn't know where that somewhere is located on a map.
