Hehe, maybe I can go into the ZipLoc importing business.

I truly appreciate the offers so far, but from my recollection mailing costs for even light stuff from the US are bonkers ... I think I can hold on by recycling the few I have left and jamming a few dozen in my suitcase when I come back from the US in June.

But, if there's no room in my case, I'll be sending some PM's when I get back ("You remember that offer you made back in January? Well ....")

I've never owned a house here without double-paned windows?

Yep, those on demand water heats are expensive.

Chain link fences are prohibited in some subdivisions. Mostly see wood going up these days. I always remember chain link fences in council estates in UK.
Maybe it's just that I only ever owned/lived in older houses in the States - pre-60's, all of them, pretty much, with the old-fashioned wooden sash windows, but with the mesh panels that you swapped with glass panels in the fall. Not really double-glazing, more two panes of glass, with dreadful insulation (I would feel the cold wind whistling down my neck while I was sitting on the sofa in my house in NC)

Can't you get them on-line? Maybe they have them at Costco. Have a look. Even if you're not a member you can go in and have a look. If they have them, join Costco over here in June (you don't have to be a business owner) then shop when you get back.

Well, over the past 24 hours or so I have received enough offers of sending me Zip-Loc bags to keep me supplied for several years! That just goes to confirm what a great bunch of people BE-ers are!

Fortunately, now I have been pointed towards a source here in the UK (Lakeland), I can get some at low cost right here in the UK (actually, I think there might even be a Lakeland in Glasgow).

Thanks to everyone who offered (some on this thread, some on the original post/Over 50's thread, some via PM or a Karma message). I think I said thanks back to each person individually, but if I missed you, thanks for trying to help me out but it looks like now I'll be OK.

I've had exactly the same grouch, and I did find the Lakeland ones eventually. I do find they don't last all that long, though. I thought it was Europe v N America but I'm in Spain at the moment, and the zip-lock bags here are fine. Thicker and with a good zip.

The other big thing that isn't in the UK are refills for hand soap, squirt cleaners and such. I've said it before that it's wicked waste to be throwing away the dispensers and spray bottles when the contents are used up. We could get 2 and 3 litre refills in Canada at a good cheap price and one dispenser would last for years and years. Thus not in landfills.

People said it was because British homes were smaller and there was no space, but guess what.... here in Spain they have them.

I'll have a think about things that work the other way.

I was very please to notice recently that Kenco sell "Eco-friendly" coffee refill packs (i.e., paper bags). It's amazing the difference in weight you notice when holding a 350g coffee in a jar and 350g coffee in one of the refill packs.

Perfect, except for one thing - the refill packs are more expensive! Where's the sense in that? Is a glass jar less expensive to make than a paper bag (that can be recycled/composted)?

Lightbulb Re: American Zip-Lock bags in UK?

I just knew I should have sent you a PM yesterday.....I posted up a link to the Costco in Glasgow on the 50s/60s thread but of course there are too many posts and threads these days and you obviously didn't spot it! OTOH I didn't realise that you had started a specific thread about ziploc bags lol!

Here we go:

http://www.costco.co.uk/Locations_ho...asgow_x_O.html

If you're not sure if you want to join Costco or not I'm believe they do a day-pass so you can take a look around the store. It's worth giving them a call anyway to ask if they carry the ziploc bags.

Good Luck! (Anyway.....Lakeland is a fab shop to look around so it's definitely worth a visit, I bought some silicone 'pods' for poaching eggs from their Stratford-upon-Avon a few years ago and I love them

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/poachpod!R.../product/12116

NB: I've just noticed that Lakeland sells limescale pods for dishwashers....we live in a very hard water area but in the US they don't have dishwasher salt unless one has bought a high-end German made Miele etc. where you can only buy it from a specialist shop. Apparently the manufacturers of Cascade/Finish etc has had to stop putting in phosphates into their dishwasher cleaning products and locally everyone is complaining that their dishwashers are less effective. I think I might order a dishwashing pod and see if it works...
