I moved here without a license too... failed my test twice in the UK and never bothered retaking it. Anyhow when I moved here I took the written test (just had to show up at the sec of state office and take it no appointment needed) I got my learners permit (I had to have it 30 before I could take my test) took 3 two hour driving lessons over 7 days last one being on a thursday thought I would have to book a test like you do in england... nope instructor asked my on the last lesson if I would like to take my test the next morning which I did and past no problem.

Thanks for that, kinda reassuring. Did you find it to be a real pain to be without a car until you passed (tho as mentioned, I'm sure that varies between places)?

american test is a joke
just remember that the majority of them are idiots, so it is really easy for brits to get a licence,
