American - British Translation please ?

Re: American - British Translation please ?
You should have done what I'm now planning on doing...... I'm gonna bring all my UK bedding (king size quilt and several covers), vac-pack them all into a size of a matchbox and stick them in the suitcase.
Hello BTW I'm a newbie, and am moving over in 5 weeks to CA on an E2 after having bought an ice cream parlor (parlour? oh dear, the problems have started already and I'm not even over yet!)

I hope you're vac-packing your mattress too!

comforter = a shag when you feel down
two standard shams = two regular marriages between USC and Brits who met on the internet
one dust ruffle = a crisp that fell on the floor.

A UK king is more or less the same as a US queen bed...but anything else probably won't fit US beds.

Oh and as you did bring it up:
Please can someone explain the different bed sizes, apologies if it's been covered a gazillion times already.
King? Queen? Double? Which is biggest?

Re: American - British Translation please ?
I've never seen anything for a double bed. There's twin, which is a single bed, then Queen, which is about 6-6.5 feet wide, then King, which is about 7 feet wide, IIRC.

King is the biggest. California king is wider but shorter. So for short fat Californians I suppose.
The order is: twin (what we would call a single)
full (small double)
queen (standard size double)
king (very large bed!)
california king kind of gets it's own classification.

Re: American - British Translation please ?
The US Twin is 39" x 75" - 3" wider than the UK Single (3ft)
The US Full is 54" x 75" - same as UK Double (4ft 6in)
The US Queen is 60" x 80" - same width as UK King (5ft) but 2" longer
The US King is 76" x 80" - 4" wider than a UK Superking (6ft) and 2" longer
After all that I need a lie down!

Superking, that's what I was thinking of. I was just trying to think what it was - Jumboking or something!

Re: American - British Translation please ?
Like others have said it is approx: UK Single/US Twin, UK Double/US Standard, UK King/US Queen but they are not exactly the same size.
Then there is US King and California King.

Look at the link I posted...it gives you the names and measurements for all beds in the UK and US. Just compare the two.

"Duvet" here is the cover, just get a white comforter and stuff it in the "Duvet". Oh and most sheets come in sets - one fitted and one flat, just buying a fitted sheet is harder.
Whew - I'd forgotten that nightmare! Hours trekking round San Diego trying to find an Eastern King fitted sheet (Target in the end I think)
