So I have to ask aside from the comments on the accent, how often do people ask how you ended up in America???

Any time I let my husband out of the house ( ) he ends up having to explain to at least one person. And they just don't want to know part of it but the whole story about how we met and why he can't work yet etc. etc.

I'm a Kiwi - been called an Aussie a lot, English even more, Swiss, and
(once) Louisianan(?)!!!

Seems many are a victim of not seeing many foreign TV programmes or
meeting many foreigners.

Yep, Steve is asked this all the time or I am as well as "how did you two meet?". We never tell people how we "really" met, only that we met while I was in London on holiday. Which isn't really a lie.....I was there on holiday and he did pick me up at Heathrow.

I'm British and work in a bank.

We recently ran a checking promotion that featured an "Outback Bag" as a
free gift with anyone opening an account. Our posters featured a kangaroo
holding one of these bags, and big lettering reading, "G'Day!" Imagine my
frustration...

I have my response down to a tee: "No, I'm British. It's actually funny you
should ask about my accent because I was about to ask if you were Canadian."

I'll get fired one day when someone gets offended

Matt

I resort to the same line sometimes >

What bugs me is when people go "OOOoooooooo I love your accent! Say
something else" - needless to say they get "Something else"

I'm Danish and get mistaken for being British all the time. When hubby
and I were looking at the apartment we're living in at present, the
landlord thought I was from somewhere on the eastcoast. Yeah VERY
eastcoast ;P

[i].... I think its because I have a Lanky accent and it just throws them for a curve ball, what can folk do, eh!
I agree Patrick, its the same for me, I've only very rarely been asked if I am Australian, and my accent, though now much softened, is more identifiably a Yorkshire accent than anything else.

Funniest thing - my wife (originally from Boston but lived in the UK for the last 9 years) was asked if she was Australian today by her hairdresser! How strange is that!

You complain about someone complaining about stereotyping, then sterotype them anyways.

Oh, and most American dental hygiene is no better than that found anywhere in Europe.

The 'cheese munching surrender monkeys' need nice pearly white teeth. They can always smile as they surrender if they have run out of white flags :-)

On my first visit to the US two weeks ago, my husband and I were asked if we were Australian, which threw us a little. Later that day we met a Kiwi who asked us where in the UK we were from and said that people were always mistaking him for British.

And to cap it all off a friend of a friend was immitating an 'English' accent all night long which sounded nothing like English but very Australian!

I think that Americans need to get out more!

Emm.
