Default Already US Citizen - Want British Citizenship - Father is British

Hey all -

I kind of have a unique situation and am trying to get my questions answered.

My situation:
-21 years old, born 1987
-son of a British father (fater was born in England, grandparents are still living in England)
-I want to get my British citizenship so I can live/get an internship there next summer and also travel easier through the airports.

My issues:
There are four areas of registration that I can find: MN1, UKM, BOS, and RS1. MN1 supports those under the age of 18 while UKM supports those born between 1961 and 1983. I was born in 1987. Also, it says I need to send my forms and supporting documents to Washington, but which forms and specific documents must I specifically provide?

It seems like this is a pretty unique case and any insight into what actions I must take would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

can anybody tell me where to start?

What form will I need to fill out? Is there a specific, concrete list of documents I will need?

I think the error in your logic is that you think you need to apply for citizenship.

You already ARE a citizen. All you need do is apply for a British passport.

Really?! So even though I've never filled out/never possessed any paper that says that I'm a British citizen, I technically already am because of my father? I feel like if you asked any British official to find a record on file about my name, Andrew West, they would not find it because I have never done anything to be put in their system.

Also, so anyway, now I need to apply for a passport. Is there a form or website I can be pointed to so I can start the proper process? Thanks so much for all the input.

You may not be "in the system". You will need to prove your relationship to your father.

Where were YOU born?
Does your father's name appear on your birth certificate?

If your father never registered your birth with the British Consulate, you don't exist to them.
The passport application puts you 'on the system' and its success documents what is already fact.

Merk, similar example I could've added earlier.. My mother is Canadian by birth, naturalized US & I was born in the US. Even though my birth was never registered in Canada, I am a Canadian citizen by descent (well I will be as soon as they finish amending the law). I will simply apply for a passport as evidence of what is already true.
But I still say I'm Canadian.

Thanks for the continued input.

I was born here, in New York City. My mother is American, my dad came over from England to marry. My birth was NOT registered with the British Consulate.

I like the example that 'meauxna' gave... that's pretty much my same situation with coming from England.

Now... do i first need to register with the British Consulate and then go for the passport... or at this point am I already capable of obtaining a passport?

We are all saying the same thing over and over.

Have you clicked through any of the links?

As long as your parents were married, you're British already. You can go for the passport directly but it would be recommended to register your birth as well.

Be aware that as a British citizen by descent you cannot automatically pass on your British citizenship a generation further, unless you have children born in the United Kingdom or a British territory. If they're also born overseas, they need to meet additional requirements to become British, such as living in the U.K. for a few years.
