Default All Bets Are Off, Online Anyway

"The United States is taking aim at internet casino ads as tensions build in a high-profile trade fight over the country's largely toothless online gambling ban.

Although many website operators insist internet gambling ads are legal, a recent crack down by U.S. authorities has led some website operators to disgorge online casino advertising revenues and spurred others to rethink their advertising policies, jeopardizing millions of dollars in revenues...."

So anyone think that's a bit daft? Anyone gamble online? And are you aloud to gamble in your state etc?

So technically, If I phone my bookies in the UK and place a bet (assuming I had one, your honour) I'm breaking a federal law?

That's all well and good, but prosecuting people for actually accessing the sites has yet to be upheld in court. The belief is that it may be illegal under the Wire Act but as prosecutions and convictions may prove difficult people are attacking this from other angles eg advertising or depositing money into betting accounts (you can't deposit money into an account using a US issued Mastercard for example).
Load of cobblers anyway - basically the US Treasury is losing out on mega-bucks in taxable revenue and people are continuing to gamble on-line regardless.

Aye, load of shite really, but they are going after the advertisers who place banner adverts, only way to get them really isn't it..

biggest scam is people gambling at casino's, especially online casino's from web cafes, and then if they lose, call in and say their credit card was stolen and what are all these charges...very hard to prove that the card wasn't stolen and they they in fact were gambling, easier to knab them in an actual casino because they have to sign for stuff and there are cameras....not that I'm saying anyone should give it a go, but it's something the missus mentioned from work

In the UK they have clamped down on that.
Before bookies would pay out by cheque, so if you won or lost you could get all your credit card deposits back from the cc company and still have your winnings. Now that loophole has been closed (winnings go back to the card and can only do so) only losers can follow this route and in the UK they will come down on you like a ton of sh*te if you get caught. I know of a guy who got 12 years (though his con ran into the millions).
If you file such a claim expect the cc company or the cops to go to the internet cafe with your picture and investigate the whole thing extremely thoroughly - whilst they still have to prove you were up to no good they will treat you like a criminal.

(I used to work in the industry by the way - I personally haven't tried any similar scams myself, though if anyone deserves to be defrauded its bookies and cc companies)

Someone just told me that Poland are a cert to beat Ecuador in their first world Cup match and that trap 5 should win the 9.57 at Walthamstow tonight - pity I have no way to take advantage of this inside info
