Wait, people use commercial plane tickets to bring their crap over? Bit odd, would've thought those coming over with work would've had their stuff shipped separately. Clearly, some stingy companies out there. Wife and I had about 100 boxes of varying sizes and weight between us, in addition to furniture and that was only a few years' worth of living together in the UK

We had the majority of our stuff come by ship after a month and some by air after a week - but still used 3 cases each when we first moved over. Seemed a lot easier than having to wait for things.

This. We shipped our own stuff (not a company relo), but still wanted more stuff to tide us over for the six weeks until our main shipmates arrived. We air-freighted two trunks with some tableware and kitchenware, extra clothing, bedding, a few books, etc.

I never shipped anything, and also only checked a few bags for moving things like ski's and a brompton bike, most small/heavy stuff like paperwork and books I brought as carry on over the course of 20 or so flights. Took a bag I could fold, full of stuff on the LON-NYC flight and then put the empty bag in my rucksack for the NYC-LON flight. I would not call a company that pays for businessfirst tickets stingy, but I guess it is United airlines so I could see that argument.

I'm sure that there is, but I feel that my company was very generous. I ballparked that it must have spent $50K+ on bringing (just) me over, once I accounted for the law firm's fees ($20K+), (very good) movers and the fully insured shipment of goods (a generous air shipment allowance plus (up to) a full 20 foot cargo container on a ship; $10K+), one way business class flight in (transatlantic) Virgin Atlantic Upper Class and (domestic) Delta business ($6K - the one way was as expensive as a return flight, given how late that it was booked), 7 weeks of (corporate) housing in a brand new, 1200 square foot apartment ($4K), 7 weeks of car rental with unlimited gas (approaching $1K with rental fees, full insurance, and gas), a third-party "relocation specialist" (who didn't do a whole lot but still cost lots of $$$s - $1K), and a "miscellaneous expense allowance" of one month of my US salary at the time of landing ($10K). I would hardly call that stingy.

I had my pick of a few airlines (British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United, or Delta) and a few routes, and I chose Virgin, purely for the incredibly nice 'Clubhouse' (lounge) at London Heathrow. :D

The Clubhouse was fun, and when they still had the US helicopter transfer instead of the Limo that and the free haircut in the lounge could tip it. But as a *A flyer United was the smartest place to put all the miles...

Our company shipped as much stuff over as we wanted. But it was picked up 5 days before our departure. We preferred to have some things through to the end and knowing that the airline would take them made it an easy choice.

Well nowadays that depends I guess. Say you fly United for work (e.g. no other choice), but who do you like/is convenient to fly for pleasure?

I fly 80,000 miles a year on BA for work, but there's little to no chance of me using them long-haul for fun.

Anyone but United, mainly Singapore, Air NZ, Thai, ANA, Turkish even Lufthansa on the right plane.

Well, hellloooo sailor! (the mind boggles as to what 'stuff' tides you over until the 'shipmates' arrive!!!) ;)

On topic:
Cheap and cheerful economy (world traveller) class with BA gives you 75kg in three bags for free. One checked, one carry-on for the overhead lockers and one laptop bag, tricky to utilise the full weight allotment but doable :lol:
I seem to recall that it was about £60 for a second checked bag and somewhere around the £100 mark for the third and subsequent others, up to a maximum of ten checked bags. (I may be wrong with my numbers but permissible sizes and fees can all be easily found on the BA site)
