Is air conditioning essential where you live?--or can you do without it?

Re: Is air conditioning essential where you live?--or can you do without it?
Air conditioning runs pretty much none stop for many months of the year here, due to the cost of running a HVAC system there are often many debates on how best to run and maintain your system, such as
* For two story homes, is it best to shut off the downstairs when sleeping upstairs over night? Or does this stress out of the upstairs zone (should keep them both at the same temps always?)
* For two story homes, is it best to shut off the downstairs when sleeping upstairs over night? Or does this stress out of the upstairs zone (should keep them both at the same temps always?)
* During off peak electricity rates (7pm to 12am here) super cool your home so that the a/c does not need to come until much later when the peak rate starts. This discussion gets going along the lines of things like thermal cooling etc
* HVAC filters. $2 spun fiber replace every 30 days or $20 hyperallergenetic replace every 60 days. Or washable carbon fiber contraptions?
* Air circulation or not? Running the HVAC internal fan to circulate air while the compressor is not running. Some say no, use other fans, dont run down yor HVAC internal fan.

I'm recommending awnings. Who the hell steals awnings? Is there a big market for stolen awnings? It doesn't get much more windy than it does here, get the wind-up or fold-up ones. The trick is getting the light off the glass.
Certainly putting Reflectix on the windows held in place with duct tape looks tasteless, but f--- it, at least I don't use a BBQ in my underwear like some of my neighbours.
