Affidavit of Support?

What is the position with the Affidavit of Support form I-864 if the sponsor is not actually related to you - do you still use the same form?

Thanks...

same form. If you are using someone else as a co-sponsor, bear in mind the spouse
submits one I-864 and you also submit the co-sponsor's separate I-864 form. Alvena

Re: Affidavit of Support?

Hi,
Your first/main sponsor must be your spouse/fiancee.
If they do not meet the 125% poverty guidelines then the
co/joint sponsor does not have to be a relative.
And yes it is the same form for spouse/fiancee and co sponsor.
There is also a form callec an I-864A in certain circumstances.
Examples.
a/. I am joint sponsoring myself with my wife and have to sign an
I-864A which is a contract between the two of us.
b/. Just in case they do not accept our Affadavit (I-864) my
sister-in-law and her husband are sponsoring us jointly and they
have to sign an I-864A as a contract between them.

I hope this makes sense, I'm sure if it doesn't someone else
will make it clearer.

Good luck

Re: Affidavit of Support?

What about this situation?

My wife doesn't work...and I am still awaiting a work permit - so cannot work either.

We are both being sponsored by a friend of the family until I can be allowed to work.

How does the affidavit of support work in that case?

Thanks for any help...

Your wife completes an I-864 and the friend/co-sponsor completes another I-864, both
of which you submit. Alvena

Re: Affidavit of Support?

Thank you, Alvena - I think I am beginning to piece this all together in my mind now. (I'll probably forget something at the last minute, though.)

Without this forum, though...I would definitely not have filed two affidavits - and that would have increased the waiting time, somewhat.

There does seem like so much red tape involved with this process, though.

Is a birth certificate enough evidence of identity of the joint sponsor for the INS...that is, including all of the other evidence, like tax returns, etc.?

Thanks for all the help!

I would have a certified copy of the joint sponsor BC. Alvena
