Advice - offered job in NY, questions about cost of living etc
Hi my husband has been offered a job in Fulton USA which is in Palaski, New York.
Please can someone tell me how much it costs roughly to keep a rented house, bills etc?
How much tax you pay each month from your pay check?
How much is medical insurance is? And if you need it for babies to?
Do you get child benefit like you do in the UK?
and anything else you think we should know
thank you

Hi, and welcome to BE.
I've moved your thread for you as it's not visa related but rather questions about life in the US and also renamed it just so those in the know will click on it. You might want to give a bit more info - what kind of house would you want, how many kids you have, what his company will cover medical wise (or will you be funding medical insurance completely yourselves), what the salary he's been offered is etc. Then our lovely forum members that live in the area can advise you better and let you know your likely living costs and whether or not it's a feasible salary.
Also, what visa will he be on? Is it one that will allow you to work?

There is no city called Palaski in New York but there is a Pulaski, New York. Have you looked at the internet's wiki? If not here is the link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski,_New_York It is in Oswego County which is lovely and the cost of living would be a bit lower than living in the New York City area or its boroughs.
You can go to Zillow.com to see what is offered in the way of real estate for rentals or homes and/or apartments.
What type of visa is your husband being offered? If it is an H visa, it is the visa from hell for the spouse as they/you will not be entitled to work or obtain a social security number. The H visas are not as easy to obtain as there are limited visas with a yearly quota. They can only be applied for in the spring of each year (believe it is April 1) and then it is over subscribed and if your husband is lucky, he might be one who is chosen to get it with an arrival in November of that year. There are other visas, of course.
Healthcare is needed by all individuals, including babies, and is often obtained through the employer who may or may not pay the full premium. In today's world, the employee will pay part of it. Then there are the deductibles and co-payments, etc. There are no child benefits in the US.

You're welcome. Apologies for all the questions, but the more info you can give the better. The key thing is the visa the employer is sponsoring him for - we get a lot of people who have been offered jobs, but don't actually qualify for a visa (or the employer isn't prepared to sponsor it), so although you've not asked about visas if you can let people know which one he'll be on that will help.
Not sure if we've got anybody on the forum in upstate New York, but I'm sure if we do they'll be happy to help.
Best of luck with it.

If it was not clear being offered a job is pretty meaningless unless you have a way to work in the US.

If you answer the question about the visa, many more people will take the time to reply with more information for you. Many people don't want to waste their time giving you chapter and verse on how health insurance works if you don't have a viable path to a visa. And if you do have a visa in place, the answers will vary depending on the category. For example, an intra-company transfer visa usually comes with a good relocation package (with a car, subsidized house, moving costs paid, sometimes private school for the children, etc and sometimes even money for flights home every year). If your husband will be working for a new company then they might not be so generous and you may have to pay for more things out of your own pocket.

Re: Advice - offered job in NY, questions about cost of living etc
So, is he being transferred by his current employer? Or does he fall into the category of specialist workers that American companies are prepared to spend upwards of $10,000 to bring over here? You mentioned child benefit. If you are in receipt of child benefit in the U.K. he must be earning less than 50,000 pounds a year. What line of work is he in? If it's a job that pays that kind of money, you have to consider whether the company will consider spending a five-figure sum on legal fees and visa costs to get him here.
As someone else has said, we see people here all the time who have been "offered a job" over here. But without a qualifying visa category the offer isn't even worth the paper it's written on.

Not so much. The US does not have a social safety net that equates to the one in the UK.
