Yes, I used it for 12 months after I moved and it enable me to prevent some identity fraud. I had several forwarded letters from different banks saying, "Thank you for opening a new account...." . I would have known nothing about it if the mail had not been forwarded.

The letter was saying they had been unable to contact me by email, very odd, checked and could see nothing wrong but put in my other email address.

I thought that too. It's a debate we've had on the Canada forums many a time. Some have been told their accounts will close unless they can give a UK address. Some have given their Canadian address and had no problems...until they did have problems and found their accounts closed.

I still have UK bank accounts with address updated to USA, doesn’t seem to be an issue. It’s important they have your correct address and that you report it all for US tax and reporting purposes, such as fbar. Temporary or otherwise doesn’t really matter really, although some banks might have internal rules the various ones I use we’re all fine.
what you can’t do as a non-resident is open new accounts, so my advice is clean up your U.K. financials before you leave but don’t close all accounts you want/need and keep at least one open in the U.K., it’s very invaluable for various reasons. Your U.K. rental income will be one basic one...

We moved to the US in 2016. With HSBC, we easily updated our address to the US online and receive post here regarding our accounts without issue.

We’re living over here on a temporary basis. We have kept our UK bank accounts with our UK address (our house is also rented out). Any credit issues go on the tenants name not the house. We have a redirection but to my parents address - it’s quite pricey to redirect over here. You can renew the redirection so it’s not just for 12 months. We’re on our second year of redirection (we lived in Sweden for 4 1/2 years and had our post redirected to Sweden I think for the first 4 years - that was the maximum then). Do whatever you feel comfortable with. I just get my parents to open anything important- we do it over video calls.

Re: Advice on keeping UK address whilst away
We kept our bank accounts for the 25 years of been absent. We transferred the address to my parents address when we left, even though we kept our house in the UK and didn’t rent it out. I didn’t want mail piling up the door or sticking out of the letter box for security reasons. Redirection was way too expensive! My father opened all of my mail, (as I requested), and if anything needed dealing with he’d call me or handle it himself. I authorised him permission through the banks to sign my cheques. I would never have closed my bank account.....it’s a valuable and necessary asset to keep for the future, particularly if you are only on a short duration contract abroad.
