'online' - where (which site)? Did you go for a mainstream site like Monster, or a more focused site? Monster was the 'big one' some time back, not sure what the latest fashion is.

By the way - did you try Linkedin at all? It can be useful but you do need 'links', which as a new arrival in an area is probably a problem.

I will re-iterate my comment about making sure your keywords are 'US centric'. There are lots of 'buzzwords' / terms used in the UK that would not apply in the US (and vice versa of course). Even spellings should be checked to make sure they are US spellings. If you are an 'Aluminum' specialist, not much point using 'Aluminium' in your resume (as a silly but hopefully illustrative example).

Also, make sure your dates are unambiguous. If you use the style aa/bb/cc, and use the 'UK' (non-US) interpretation of said dates, you will confuse your audience. I always use (eg) '01-Dec-95' rather than 1/12/95 or 12/1/95.

they see the buzzwords like 'aviation' etc and assume you can do certain things.

I think it's wrong that someone that has never even looked at a spanner is hiring people for engineering jobs.

I went for an interview at a weapons/defence company. the HR didn't bother to ask or research that because of 'ITAR' you have to be a US citizen to work on the project. so i basically got a free tour of the factory that is building the orion space shuttle.
so i ended up wasting my time and theirs and i also got my hopes up before being crushed.

...
In your last example, that's exactly what HR should have caught. HR are not 'subject matter experts', but should catch employment legality issues.

In larger companies, and/or in fast growing companies, they will have separate areas for recruiting vs HR. HR is typically focused on keeping the existing workforce happy. But in smaller companies, and/or, companies that only hire occasionally, the HR folks are tasked with the recruiting effort (or the task is farmed out to an outside recruiter).

All of them.
Indeed was the one I used most but I signed up to pretty much everything out there. LinkedIn I found to be not very good, it's really more of a white collar site.

I also used Craigslist but I never got a reply from anyone on there. Plenty of jobs for plumbers and carpenters on there I found, not relevant to me but thought I'd mention it.

People also said networking through friends etc but all my friends here work with computers so that was a bit of a no go for me.
At my most desperate and low point, I went out to a few of the local bars and just asked random people if they knew anyone who needed a hand with anything or if they knew companies looking for workers.

It's such a relief to have all that behind me now.

Thanks a million for your useful advice!

Indeed is a local company for us and they have had a couple of jobs that I might be interested in but the whole CV thing online freaked me out a bit since I have a very, very irregular career path. I will have a go now though and just play with the key words.
Also, eldest daughter will be working with them as an intern (CS student) during the summer so might try and get some insights from her.

Try looking at local Facebook groups. My Arizona ones were useless - the only job-related stuff would be SAHMs trying to recruit more people to their MLM Cult of the Month - but the ones I belong to now in Ohio would be excellent if I was looking for a starter job, something in retail/ construction/ warehouse/ call center work. These roles get advertised all the time; I think one of the groups is actually run by the local Manpower office.

Kodokan, Indeed have a couple of "country manager" roles open. The UK/Ireland one they've had a difficult job filling (hiring manager is a local Brit expat) . The job I have my eye on is the global mobility specialist. Which just happens to be the exam I'm taking next month.

Ooh, good luck! Go and become a dazzling corporate success... and then hire me 😉 I have a similar difficulty wondering how I could possibly fill in an online application form in any way that made sense.

Bah, just found out I didn't make it past the third round interview on a job opportunity. Though potentially having four rounds seems excessive to me.

I was starting to get really excited about it too.

Sorry to hear that.

Four seems excessive. I don't think I have ever had more than three, and two is more usual in my experience.

Does seem it doesn't it. Most of mine have been two rounds as well, but one place that four, which I didn't make either.

Someone the missus used to worked with, had 8 rounds to get his gig, but it's the regional store manager for Apple and came with a $250K salary

The job I got recently I only had one interview for, it was surprisingly informal and instead of answering all those weird questions they fire at you
(give an example where you did something good etc in your previous job)
I was just given practical tasks to complete.

4 interviews sounds really excessive.
