Default Adoptive Child becoming a UK citizen

I am a UK citizen, married to a US citizen and living in the US. We are adopting from South Korea. Once the adoption is finalised and the child is a US citizen I hope to apply for dual citizenship with the UK. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Are you yourself born or naturalised in the United Kingdom?

The application for registration would be sent to the British Embassy in Washingtion. They would forward it to the Home Office in Liverpool for decision. Once the child has a Certificate of Registration as a British citizen, application for a British passport may be made.

Application must be made before child turns 18. There is no flexibility if the deadline is missed.

The fee is the equivalent of GBP400 + a consular fee.

In that case follow the instructions on the link given in post #2.

It would be more difficult if your claim to being British was based on a parent.

If you've not got your American citizenship, you should do so as soon as eligible. It does not cause loss of British citizenship.
