Adoption as UK Expat
 

Hi,

I'm a newbie on this forum. Have been living here for nearly a year. Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get any info on going through the adoption process in the US as an expat? My husband and I are here on an L1 Visa, and it's a permanent move.

Would really appreciate any advice on where to start. Can't seem to find anything on t'internet!

I'm sure the rules will depend on your state.

Though there's a few here who have adopted and fostered, so I'm sure they can offer more advice.

I'm glad to hear the company is sponsoring you for green cards. As an aside, no visa is permanent - and after 7 years (for an L visa) you will be forced to leave the US.

Congratulations on your decision to adopt. My stepdaughter and her husband adopted a newborn girl just over 2 years ago... it was the best decision they've ever made!

Correct - and depending on the state it may be a lot more difficult/impossible without a green card, or in some cases, US citizenship.

Thanks for your replies. I'm based in Virginia at the moment, and we're in the process of getting our green cards. Don't really know where to go from here really!

Hello Rockertron. We were in the same situation as you in 2001 but living in CT. Unfortunately we found it impossible to adopt whilst on any kind of visa. Fortunately my husband's job moved back to UK in 2003 and we adopted our daughter whilst living in UK. We are now back in USA with our beautiful adopted daughter who is now 10 going on 20.
