Default Adjustment Of Status Query - Which Office?

Hello all,

I know that this question relies on our petition being approved and my interview going well etc, i'm just trying to be as organised as possible, to prevent me from going insane
:-)
I was wondering about which office you apply for adjustment of status at, is it merely the sub-office closest to you? I ask becuase we will be living in Illinois territory, but only 20 minutes away from St Louis, Missouri (Chicago IL is 6 hours away). Does it matter if you file in a different state as long as it's the closest office geographically?

Thanks for any help,

Peace,

D.

Hi:

Jurisdiction counts, not geography. The regulations say that CHI has jurisidiction over all of Illinois and KC over all of Missouri. There is a sub-office in St. Louis.

If you were my client I would make a few calls to local attorneys to find out, but my inclination is to say that it looks like that CHI is the place.

BTW, this happens in California, too. Paso Robles is in San Luis Obispo County which is in the LA district but it is closer to San Francisco and to the Fresno Sub-office of the SF district. Upland will go to San Bernadino while Pomona goes to Los Angeles.

Thanks...I did have a sneaking feeling that would be the case, but I'll ask my fiance to check, and i'll let you know what the outcome is.

The INS website tells you where you must file. Notice that sometimes you
have to file at a further office but interviews, etc. are done more locally.
In your case if you live in Illinois, you must file at Chicago :
