Has anyone a link to a site on this topic? I thought I saw it at some point.

Also, does a permanent resident have to do the whole road test thing to get a US
driver's license if they already have a Canadian one?

Thx

Hi Vicki, yes I do think you'll have to do the road test...my husband had to anyway.
If you want to write feel free to do so, my husband is from Canada.

Whether you need to do a road test or not depends on the state you live in.

Both of these sites have a bit of that sort of information.

It depends on where you are relocating to. New York State does NOT make Canadians take another road test nor do they have to take a written test. They can swap one license for another without a problem.

Take a look at http://www.new2usa.com They have a lot of good info, including stuff
about adjusting and culture shock.

Here are some links I found searching Yahoo on adjusting to life in the US
http://www.new2usa.com/showpage.jsp?PageID=adjusting
http://www.uakron.edu/oip/handbook/social.htm

Also my husband (Canadian) only needed to take a written test to get his Wisconsin
CDL (commercial drivers license). He also had to turn in his Manitoba license
(actually they gave it back to him with a big hole punched through it).

Take Care. Shelley

In NC, you also need to take a vision test. Other than that (& the written test
mentioned above), there are no other requirements for holders of Canadian
driver's licenses.

The vision test is required in NC each time you renew your license. This applies to
everyone, locals as well.

In Oklahoma I had to take no written or driving test at all. I just swapped my
Ontario, Canada license for an Oklahoma one. I did have to take a very quick vision
test to prove I do not need glasses to drive.
