Re: Accommodation in NYC
Hey, we've just got our apartment after staying somewhere temporary. Different areas but still in NYC.
The temporary bit was airbnb
The rental was found by chance by a walk-in. No fee and not on the market yet, it came available just before our airbnb ran out. Serendipitous I guess but anyway, it worked out...
2 of us + cat. We sort of new the areas we'd be interested in, so when we found airbnb in that area seemed a great way to both check out the area + look. Worked out well. Not saying there wasn't a risk there, but sometime you have to jump in.
We still have zero furniture but hey, one step at a time...
I know little about the areas you mention, not ones we looked at ourselves but anyway wanted to say airbnb and perhaps open house / walk-ins are a nice way to find a no-fee place, perhaps ones not yet on the market 😄

Trying to sort out an AirBnB when you are in the midst of a CR-1 is a little tough as you don't know the EXACT date you'll be able to go so you have to make rough guess. We have just submitted I-130 so i'm hoping if I really push for cancellations on the AE interview and medical exam that I can get it done by mid october.
I've seen most places do no fee's now? Little concerned about credit checks as I won't have credit lol and my husband has been away for over 2 years from the states?

Riverdale is the Bronx ... it is a lovely place to live. A bit expensive if you want to live in the hi-rises which are mostly co-ops these days but there are quite lovely single and multiple family homes there as well. Also a very lively Irish population.
New Yorkers have a named certain areas of the Bronx different names, i.e. Parkchester, Woodlawn, Wakefield, Soundview, Riverdale, etc. You find the same in Manhattan with Washington Heights, SoHo, Little Italy, Chinatown, Yorkville, etc.

Riverdale and Soundview are a little too far out for us. We ideally want to be able to commute to our jobs within 20 mins so East Harlem is looking more idealistic. We currently live in Canary Wharf so pretty used to the expensive rent! lol

It seems to me you've already decided the 4/5/6 is the corridor to look along, given the locations of your workplaces. Just be aware that that line gets horrendously overcrowded at rush hour so consider that carefully. I used to take the 4/5/6 downtown from Grand Central Terminal but now I take the Shuttle to Times Square and then the N/Q (or R/W at a pinch). A bit longer but a much less stressful ride.

Five of New York's counties are each coextensive with New York City's five boroughs and do not have county governments. They are: New York County (Manhattan), Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County (The Bronx), Richmond County (Staten Island), and Queens County (Queens).

I think you should only sort out your airbnb once you're certain of the dates. We stayed at an extended stay for about 10 days, so I suppose that could be an option too. This was in NJ though.

They originally asked me for SSN and said without I'd have to either put money in escrow or pay an insurance fee, which was like another months rent up front. Of course having just arrived I had no SSN and even if I did it would show zero history. I gave them my job letter offer and that turned out to be enough alone. I think it is down to the discretion of the owners really at the end of the day, they make a judgement, nothing is set in stone.
We had trouble too with dates, especially since you're not meant to make plans until you get the visa in hand, yet we had weeks of work to vacate our full house etc.
In the end we picked a date to aim for and booked the airbnb which fortuitously became available in the area we both really liked at the right time. It gave us 2 weeks to find somewhere and the rest is history...
We just got a sofa and wow does it feel nice to be able to sit down again 😂 And guess what, a new matress just arrived so no more temporary air matress. Got fibre internet, things are on the up
Good luck with your move, it is very difficult to coordinate and there are many risks. We found airbnb few and far between in NYC core area, and long stay even less so. Especially if you want some level of facilities like we did. Still, they do crop up. I'm so glad we did it this way and we both looked at apartments and neighbourhoods when here in the flesh. Doing it all remotely would have been a massive risk and who knows what we might have ended up with...
Hope it works out for you!

I just remembered I heard on NPR recently about people being fined for advertising rentals on airbnb for less than 30 days. I think it's now illegal in NYC.

We moved back to the NYC area (lived in Queens prior to move) after two years in London (lived in Canary Wharf too!) and our credit was pretty much the same as before we left.

Once I have my embassy appt booked for my interview i'll have a better idea so will have a look around then and possibly have to take a hit.
Wouldn't be able to do NJ as my husband will be going straight back into work in the Bronx.

No fee seems pretty popular, I think the broker fee approach comes when you want something a bit specialist or particular, we're not there yet. Also the one month free thing is good, we got a decent deal on 12 months for 11 months and access to all amenities which is nice.

I've also heard its now very much like over here.. One month down and one months deposit - was this the same for you?
I'll be transferring to my US office so i'll have an employment letter and my hubby is going back to his old role so both employed. Lets hope that works out for us too.
I've also seen them say the whole visa in the hand thing however as soon as I have the visa we are planning to leave - flights will quadruple and accomidation non existent. I think i'm going to take the gamble. Once I get my embassy interview date i'll start booking places. How long were you in a airbnb and how long to get into your apartment? I'm not sure a month in a airbnb looking for a place will be long enough..
Its crazy how you can't get furnished places anywhere really so we'll be in the exact same position as you LOL!

Re: Accommodation in NYC
You're right that unfortunately furnished places are very rare here. It made things easier in London as all we had to find was a furnished place, no need to go furniture shopping or to ship furniture over.
I think a month in an airbnb should be enough to find a place, as typically places in NYC (Manhattan especially) go pretty fast.
I'm actually surprised to hear there are lots of no fee rentals available. That was my biggest pet peeve with NYC rentals. We paid a fee the first time we move to NYC as we were new to the area and had to find a place immediately. Our next place, we rented in coop/condo buildings right from the owner, so no fee.

Where did you find the second place from the owner? I've been looking at Zillow and StreetEasy and theres lots of no fee's on there.
