In the next town to where I live there are loads of writers, artists and media people resident.
About a year ago I went to a talk by a prominent resident who is a television documentary producer and she was showing her film about the Haj which had just gone out on the Discovery Channel.
She herself is a Muslim and had been on the Haj herself a few years before, and after her screening she had a question and answer session.
I was itching to know exactly what was in that huge black box that all the muslims have to walk around 7 times (thinking perhaps that Mohammed's remains were inside). I was astonished to hear that there is nothing in there at all - it's just symbolic! Also there was a *huge* fuss made when the late King Fah'd went inside with a broom to 'sweep' a corner of it - as it apparently showed that the 'revered' King was humble enough to hold a broom.

I wonder if dying during the Hajj brings with it the same promises of a glorious afterlife that blowing yourself and various innocent bystanders up does ??
