Same goes for a house. You really think a thief tests doors to see if they are locked or not?

It's more to deter the opportunist. A 'professional' thief is going to get in no matter what (as I tell my wife when she nags me about not locking my car in the garage ...).

We did have a stereo nicked out of an unlocked (and unused at the time) car in our driveway in a very quiet street a few years back. Joke was on them though, it was a piece of crap

I had someone steal a lock and chain off of a motorcycle once... and leave the motorcycle.

That was disheartening.
