Default **URGENT CHINA TRAVEL QUESTION**

I have a flight from Dallas, TX to Shanghai tomorrow morning, and I have my travel visa for china in my British passport, which is fine, except I just became a US citizen and so I now have no permanent resident card, instead I have a US passport.

Will this create a travel problem at the airport? The china side does not concern me, its more getting onto the plane if I have no resident card, simply a US passport . Although a US passport is better - I think this will be an unusual scenario for the airline folks

Obviously I will get a new VISA in my US passport as soon as I can, but too late for my AM flight tomorrow.

No. Bring both passports! This sort of thing happens more than you might imagine!

IMO you should be able to travel out on your Uk pp with visa and as long as you take your US pp to reenter the US I think it shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong

No problem you will need to show your visa at check in and in Shanghai. So you can use the old passport.
You must use your US passport to re-enter the US, technically you are also supposed to use it exiting the country but there is no check, if in doubt show both at check in.
Have a good trip.

Ask the airline. You have to use your US passport to leave and enter the United States. However, if Chinese procedure is anything like US, you have to show your visaed UK passport to be boarded.

Note that airlines have to electronically post their manifests for US purposes.

Consider yourself corrected....

It's illegal for a US Citizen to enter and exit the US on a non-US passport.

China is really serious about immigration control.

There are many cases of children born in china who have both foreign and chinese nationality and can not leave China without a visa stamped in their chinese passport - and they won't let you use the foreign passport without a chinese visa on it either. The British government's policy is to issue a british visa on the chinese passport of a dual british/chinese citizen in these circumstances.

(even though dual nationality is not allowed by China for chinese naturalized abroad, there is little the chinese government can do to a child that is born in china to a chinese parent if a foreign government considers the child its citizen)

I don't think you have any problem.

You are now a US citizen and have a US passport so you leave and re-enter the US using your US passport.

You are still a UK citizen and (I presume) have a valid visa for your visit to China in your UK passport so you will enter China using your UK passport and visa.

... but that doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the OP's situation - a UK citizen (and, incidentally, now also a US citizen) with (I assume) a valid visa allowing them to visit China in their UK passport ...

Ok, thanks, Im going for it with this exact approach. Only concern at this stage is the airline check-in. They need to see a china visa confirmed before i fly, they may not like this being in a different passport. We will see in around 4 hours!!

It has quite a lot to do actually - it shows that china, at least in some cases, verifies whether the passport you use allows you to enter the country of your next destination and whether that same passport was lawfully used to enter china. Most countries aren't that serious about immigration exit control.

If that is the case then it is, indeed, at least potentially relevant.

Your previous post did not explicitly mention that specific issue and I was certainly unable to deduce it from the example that you provided.
