**OT** Unpaid immigrant hospital bills a concern
Doesn't the proposed law that requires sponsors to guarentee medical
bills is a thinly-veiled form of welfare that is contrary to the law
that states immigrants can not recieve benefits for three years?
(And isn't the figure of 75% of immigrants sponsored a bit high?)

This bill isn't welfare. It's enforcement of the affidavit of support
and public charge grounds of the INA. It's doing the right thing,
i.e. making the sponsors pay up.
The bigger problem, IMO, is when ILLEGALS use hospital services and
don't pay up. There's nothing anyone can do to collect from them, but
deport them back to Mexico (because let's face it, the vast majority
of them come from Mexico).

And I agree that it's wrong that USC can't get the medical paid for, especially if immigrants are scamming the system...I'm certainly more appreciative of the NHS now that I'm here, that's for sure
