City Data is your friend. Here's the page for Long Beach CA, which shows that the median household income in 2008 was $50,975.

I'd take a look at some of the neighboring areas. Also look at Realtor.com and Craig List for those areas and check the local rental prices. Remember that you will probably have to pay at least 2 month's rent up front. After that, figure out how much you'll have left...
