Default $60 haircut - how much tip should I leave?

I left $10... its not quite 20% - is this enough, or will the hairdresser think I wasn't happy with the haircut?

Coming from paying no (or much much smaller) tips in the UK its really difficult to gauge what is acceptable over here.

I think that would be fine. I usually do 15 to 20 percent. Here is a site dedicated to tipping info which may be helpful (though in the tri-state area 10%, which they note as the lower limit for a haircut tip, would to my mind be too low):

That's OK, as many people don't carry change.

Should not leave any tip, about time this patronage style payment system was abolished, give them no tip, encourage them to unionise and tell the employers to post actual costs as prices.

I wish I had the balls to follow through with my words.

Isn't it a lot.. but I've been paying that much, and it is worth every cent to have someone who actually knows what she is doing. Plus, I don't have to go every month anymore, so I figure it works out.

Eric, your tip was probably fine. I give her $15, but we have a long time relationship and she always gets me some extras.

$10 would have paid for the whole haircut and tip out this way.

Hair salons can be real tricky in this regard, it certainly isn't as simple as you suggest. Many stylists are essentially independent contractors "leasing" space from the salon owner.

If you want to build up a relationship with your stylist and keep going back, it would certainly be in your best interest to tip. The other consideration you also have is whether to tip the person who washed your hair a couple of bucks separately from the person who actually cut it (unless of course it is the same person).

This reads funny to me, after living in South Korea for a number of years, where getting a hair cut was always a tricky job, what with barbers shops often doubling up as brothels.

(I used to avoid the situation by getting my hair cut in a bath-house, which led to an alternative odd situation of getting my hair cut stark-bollok-naked.)

HA!

I read all about that in a book about the world cup in Korea in 2002.... the organisers of the world cup were given a stipend of $100 a day by FIFA and were spending it at brothels........
then going to the press boxes and eating all the food.

the press complained there was no food for them, as the stadium organisers were eating it.

FIFA were like, but we're giving them $100 a day for expenses, how can they be hungry????

FIFA decide to lay on extra food at Press Boxes but cut the $100 stipend.

Whores riot in Korea as a consequence due to loss of revenue.

FIFA issue $100 a day stipend and a boxed lunch to world cup officials and organisers............

No shit.

Hiowever, having said that, 10 bucks for a 60 dollar haircut would be a fair tip.

My hairdresser who I've been going to for about 17 years I guess, works for himself with a salon in his home. So does that mean he shouldn't be tipped?
