Pretty sure the out of pocket cap legal maximum is around $8000, so shouldn't be getting a $9K bill. Though I guess you could end up unlucky and get an out of network doctor who could charge more than your out of pocket max. Sad thing is hospitals are bringing in doctors who aren't normally there to deal with the increased load, so the scenario of "in network hospital, out of network doctor" will probably be more likely than usual and since hospitals will be so full there won't be much of a choice in the matter.

Best of luck to the insurance companies, tbh. This is yet another industry where the scale of the problem is bound to break the existing model. Because one number that is going to stay bigger than the number of deaths, in the number of people who received treatment and survived.

This may be what is needed to see some significant changes in the healthcare system.

How many have lost their insurance or will lose their insurance in this pandemic because they lost their job?

Luckily it's early enough in the year that most will have earned relatively little so far, so a lot of people will qualify for Medicaid (in the states where applicable) or highly subsidized Obamacare. Also many companies are putting their employees on furlough rather than laying them off, which means they may be able to keep their insurance. Macy's is an example of this, they've closed stores but are continuing to pay for their employees' health insurance.

Also, a substantial portion of the people not working now are lower paid service workers who didn't have employment-based insurance in the first place, so it isn't necessarily a change for them. In fact, in most states people earning less than $25 an hour are set to earn more from the expanded unemployment benefits than they would working, so it may actually be easier for them to afford health insurance than it was before, especially with driving, eating out, and entertainment expenses being lower.

Just received mine directly into my bank account. I thought non-resident aliens were excluded? I'm an L1 visa holder.

I thought that I was a non-resident alien, and resident aliens were those with GCs but not citizenship. My mistake!

Our two kids got theirs today, in their bank accounts. We’ll be waiting for ours, since ours will be a snail-mail check. We are thinking of giving ours to friends, a couple with a baby, who need it more than we do - or alternatively, giving it to food banks in our two nearby towns.

I got mine yesterday, probably like you it's money I don't need. I have already passed mine on to someone that needs it more.

We have a friend whose mother died last year, about six or eight months ago I believe. On Friday she received a $1,200 check addressed to her mother. And they knew she was dead, because her name had “dec.” after it. Our friend asked her accountant how this happened, and he said it’s a common problem, and the IRS were unable to prevent those checks being sent out to dead people.
