The UK Annual Abstract of Statistics has a table called "Acceptance for Settlement by Nationality"..
According to this data, in 2004 only six countries exceeded the United States in terms of number of citizens accepted for settlement in the UK. They were Serbia & Montenegro, Turkey, Nigeria, South Africa, India and Pakistan. These are the number of US Citizens "accepted for settlement;"
2002 - 4,355
2003 - 5,620
2004 - 4,120

And yet, according to the table at the end of the UN publication I linked to earlier, there are an estimated 224,000 US Citizens resident in the UK. That seems high, with immigration of four or five thousand a year..?

I just looked at earlier data (we have the British Abstract of Statistics back to 1955 at this library, with data back to 1938.) It seems that from 1938 - 2004, immigration to the UK from the US has been from about 2,000 to 5,000 per year.

Almost 1/2 of them - 45% - were 'immediate relatives of US citizens', I guess that includes the marriage based visas

For the same reason, immigration from the UK will be under-represented in this report, due to the constant insistence by the USCIS agents that "UK" stands for Ukraine!!!

By the same token, maybe some of the 'UK' cases are adding to the 'Unknown' bucket ...

Yes, well there were some people here in GA that wanted to know why there was civil unrest in Georgia last year. Confused them no end.

Yes, that was the first thing that I noticed. Does the first country principle kick in in airport transit lounges, or only at border control?

Perhaps that's where the 64 UK asylum seekers came from. Same error, but in reverse?

I thought it was the first country you came to you had to land and make your claim there. You couldn't transit to a third country.
