TN stands for Trade NAFTA. It is a result of the North American Free Trade
Agreement. Only Canadian and Mexican citizens can apply for one.
It allows one to work and live in the US for up to one year at a time. The
status is TEMPORARY only and you cannot adjust status to a permanent
resident from a TN.
However, you can "renew" the status annually.

It is permission to work and live in the US for 365 days. If you
change jobs, you need to apply for a different TN. You cannot apply
for a greencard while in TN status as you can with an H1B. To apply
you must provide job offer letter, degree in the discipline required
for the job and a transcript from that degree. You should consult
http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/visas.htm#NAFTA for more info.

TN is for Canadian citizens to work in the US under the NAFTA
treaty agreement among the three countries of USA, Canada and
Mexico. Your occupation should be under NAFTA list of
occupations. for more info, check www.canada2usa.com
